“Your word is your bond.”
I attended a two-part training program called On Course in the 1980’s, in the height of the personal development movement. It was the first workshop of its kind I had taken. As the title indicates, it was about staying on course – with our dreams, our goals, our integrity. The workshop later inspired me to continue my education in Human Services at Western Washington University.
One of program’s primary tenets was finding a win/win solution to the agreements we make, so that all parties involved are satisfied – whether the agreement is with a friend, a child, a significant other, an employee, a constituent or another.
The second tenet, and in my view even more important, was being our word.
Following through on what we agree to do increases our self-esteem, develops our character and builds trust in our relationships.
If you’re not ready to make an agreement, give yourself time to think about it, rather than succumbing to pressure. Ask clarifying questions, if needed. You’ll feel at ease with your decision when you’re clear, and deepen your self-respect, as well as earn it from others. And remember, there is always room to negotiate.
